Why Spirulina Is Better Than Any Other

You may be wondering what Spirulina (pronounced spi-rah-lina) actually is and what it does for our bodies. The answer to that seems to be an ongoing list as it’s perhaps the world’s healthiest food! In technical terms, Spirulinspirulina-ponda is a deep green aquatic plant and nutritious dietary supplement. The superfood grows in water which has a high pH (alkaline) and after it has been harvested, spirulina can be sold in tablet, powder, flake and liquid forms. Despite being one of the world’s oldest foods, it’s fast becoming one of the world’s most current cutting-edge source of nutrition!

According to the University of Maryland Medical Centre, the superfood increases the production of antibodies which are infection-fighting proteins that improve immunity and help fight off chronic illnesses such as cancer. Which goes to show that consuming Spirulina can help your body prevent developing cancers.

Feeling tired or down? Dr Oz recommends combining 1 tsp of spirulina powder with 12 oz of lime juice and freezing the mixture in ice cube trays to give you a big healthy energy boost! The mixture of Spirulina and lime enhances energy performance as they unlock the sugar from our cells and when they are frozen, the cold from the ice boosts our metabolic energies to give our bodies a big “wake up call”.

Another positive to using the superfood Spirulina is that it can help speed up weight loss. Protein-rich foods like Spirulina promote weight loss because it takes more energy to metabolize. For example, when you eat protein, it helps maintain lean tissue and contributes to fat burning. As well as this, it can help lessen hunger and the best way to maximise this benefit is to consume Spirulina in the morning or during the day, rather than at night time.

Spirulina can actually be a beneficial supplement in improving one’s eye health. The green algae is rich in Vitamin A, which is important for maintaining healthy eyes. Which also relates to why your parents would always tell you to eat your carrots and say it would make you see in the dark- as it also maintains a lot of Vita
min A in it. However, Spirulina actually has ten times the amount of Vitamin A concentration per gram of carrots!

Lastly, a DIY face mask containing Spirulina can help to balance and brighten the skin. This recipe contains ½ a tsp of Spirulina Powder, 1 banana mashed up and 1 tsp of fresh lemon juice. Once the mask is mixed together and prepared, for effective results, it’s best to apply the mask and keep it on the skin for 10-20 minutes before rinsing it off with warspirulina-face-maskm water. In terms of what the mask actually does for your skin, the Spirulina has antibacterial properties which helps keep your pores clear and tight. As well as this, the superfood is loaded with an extensive number of antioxidants, which means it’s also effective in lessening the damaging effects of sun exposure and also helps to reduce the appearance of any lines or wrinkles. Along with this, the banana in the mask helps infuse moisture into the skin and the lemon juice brightens the skin.

There you have it! From not knowing what on earth Spirulina is (or how to pronounce it), you now know the quite spectacular benefits it has on our bodies, from effectively helping us lose weight to having magical cancer prevention powers! They don’t call it a ‘Super’-food for nothing.
