What’s your name?
What do you do?
I am a strategy consultant that specialises in health care. Basically that means I go into a health organisation and support them to improve the care for their patients. This involves understanding their current situation and putting together a strategy to get them to their desired situation.
How did you get into blogging and living a healthy lifestyle?
Because of my day job I decided to apply my strategy skills to helping anyone achieve their goals, and I set up What Zoe Does this year. A main factor in achieving your goals is positive physical and mental health. Without this you may be able to progress for so long, but you won’t be able to maintain it! I genuinely believe that investing in your health will reap benefits across all parts of your life. I am also a qualified personal trainer and before working as a consultant I worked for The Third Space, helping people reach their health and fitness goals.
What are some of your hobbies and why do you enjoy them?
I will always workout and set myself fitness goals. Right now I am doing a strength training programme and it is such a great feeling to see what my body and mind are capable of. When you build muscle you also need to eat, and that is a main hobby of mine! I track my food because I need to know I am eating enough to support my fitness goals, and I never deprive myself. Every week I will cook a meal at home, or eat a meal out, which is special and different to my norm. I also love a good cocktail and am working my way through the top 100 bars in the world. If you ever want a recommendation then I am your girl!
What is your go-to snack?
I always pack my own food when I am out for the day or travelling for work. The easiest snack for this is a protein or energy bar. I have tried my fair share and have two favourites, Clif bar and Creative Nature. I love a Creative Nature bar with a coffee pre workout. It is a perfect balance of carbohydrate and protein, and of course I think they are super tasty. Raw Cacao is my favourite! My other go to snack is mashed avocado on rye bread. This is my recipe: cut an avocado in half and put one half back in the fridge (top tip, putting lemon juice or mayonnaise over the exposed avocado will stop it browning), then squeeze half a lime into the mashed avocado and a pinch of cayenne pepper and salt. Make sure it is mixed and then smooth over your rye bread. This is my perfect snack. If you want more protein add a poached egg to the top.
What are your favourite 3 exercises?
My number one exercise is the squat. This is a compound move and therefore works your whole body. Understanding how to do this move well is crucial, as you do not want to injure yourself. My current max weight for 3 reps is 65kg. Watch this space! 🙂
I also love to work my shoulders, so the second exercise is the lateral raise. Don’t go too heavy as this is a smaller muscle and you don’t want other muscles to take over. My tip is to raise your hands pinky first to really engage the medial delt. Do 3 sets of 8-12 to build muscle.
Exercise three is the lateral pull down. I love a toned back and by building your lateral muscles (and shoulders) you can create a smaller waist without losing any weight!
What are your top 5 tips for staying focused, healthy and reaching your goals?
- Sleep! Don’t try to be a super hero, sleep is crucial and so I recommend keeping to a set bedtime across 7 days of the week and 7-8 hours.
- Water. You may not feel any different if for one day you drink 2 litres of water, but if you regularly drink enough water you will have more energy, lose weight and be able to keep focussed.
- Proper nutrition. Make sure you have a balanced diet of carbohydrate, fat and nutrition. Your body needs all of these macro nutrients to perform at an optimal level.
- Find your purpose. When you know what it is you want to achieve and why your energy levels will multiply!
- Choose your company wisely. If you surround yourself with negative people it will drain you of energy. Surround yourself with people who share your ambition and passions
How do you get your energy levels up and stay motivated?
Food is critical for keeping energy levels and motivation up. I know that when I feel like something can’t be done that I need to eat and then reassess the situation! Always carry a snack with you for these moments. I love energy/protein bars or babybel lites for times when I need a quick fix. Fage greek yoghurt pots are also a great source of protein.
In this day and age, what are some ways you stay centred and mindful of your surroundings?
A lot of people swear by meditation but I am not a meditation girl. However, there are many ways to be mindful without meditation. Make sure to schedule in ‘me’ time to your week. Every week I will make sure I have a long hot bath. I fill it with oils and epsom salt. I don’t answer any phone calls or text messages during my bath time. Depending on how I feel I will watch my favourite Youtubers or I will listen to a relaxing mindfulness session on an app. I really like Calm.
Out of what you’ve tried, what is your favourite Creative Nature product and why?
My absolute favourite is the Raw Cacao Energy Flapjack. Creative Nature has so many wonderful products, but as someone who loves easy, healthy on the go snacks this is my go to bar. Saying that, I am really excited to try the muffin mix.
If you can give advice to young girls and young women about being happy, healthy and successful- what would it be?
If i could speak to my younger self I would say do not be in a rush. You don’t have to plan your entire life by the age of 20, you don’t even have to know it all by the age of 30, or 40! Be curious about life, and above all respect your body. Learn what means a lot to you, and then pursue it. Don’t let negative thoughts stop you! Give yourself a daily pep talk and make sure to find people who can lift you up! I genuinely believe we are capable of anything we want, and I want to help you achieve it!
