National Milk Day; a look into milk and lactose intolerance

Posted on: Jan 15, 2021

Are you lactose intolerant?

Did you know that January 11th is National Milk Day, a day to celebrate the first time milk was delivered to homes inside sterilized glass bottles, in 1878. In 1970 almost 99% of milk was delivered to peoples’ doors. By 2014 doorstep delivery was at less than 5% of the liquid dairy market. The majority of people buy their milk from supermarkets, in plastic bottles. These days even fewer people have milk delivered to their homes, as our way of life has changed. 2% of the UK population are vegan, and between one and two in every ten people have lactose intolerance and milk consumption has dropped by 50%.

If you are lactose intolerant it means your body doesn’t produce enough lactase to break down the lactose in milk which enables it to be absorbed into your bloodstream. Then, the lactose stays in the digestive system where it is fermented by bacteria. This leads to pain, discomfort and digestive problems which can be chronic and can take a long time to diagnose (as is often the case with allergies and intolerances). An intolerance to lactose can develop at any age. Many cases first develop in people aged 20 to 40, although babies and young children can also be affected.

Lactose intolerance is not the same as a milk or dairy allergy.  If you are allergic to something, even a tiny particle can be enough to trigger a reaction, whereas most people with lactose intolerance can still consume small amounts of lactose without experiencing any problems. However, this does vary from person to person.

Alternatives to dairy milk

Here at Creative Nature, because of our deep understanding of allergies and intolerances we also know a fair amount about ‘alternatives’. These days there is a huge range of alternatives to dairy milk available at supermarkets.  Sold in sweetened, unsweetened and flavoured varieties, including chocolate and vanilla. Vegetarians also use these alternatives because they are plant-based. They include:

  • Soy Milk
  • Almond Milk
  • Rice Milk
  • Coconut Milk
  • Flax Milk
  • Hemp Milk
  • Oat Milk

However even some of these are not available to those with complex allergies so sometimes those with allergies cannot consider a number of the alternatives now available.

Using dairy alternatives in Creative Nature’s baking mixes

All of our products are dairy-free, gluten-free and in fact free of the top 14 allergens  therefore we use diary alternatives in all of our recipes. We try out many in the research and development phase of any product so that we bring the best to our customers. We always suggest to our customers that they use their favourite plant-based milk to add to our baking mixes – these products are highly flexible so you can even mix it up with different alternatives on different days! How wonderful to have some variety when you are so used to a restricted diet.
